Places to see on your 2 days from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Ait ben Haddou Kasbah
Ksar Ait BenHaddou is 40 minutes by car (the roads are excellent) from Ouarzazate. Ait Benhaddou is divided into two parts: the new city where Moroccans migrated to enjoy running water, electricity, etc., and the kasbah, which still has four families of resistance fighters. The 2 parts are separated by a river that you can cross on foot without problem (from April). Note that the entrance to the kasbah is through large doors (bab) and that there is a free one: along the river on the right (when the kasbah is facing you) then as soon as the reinforcement walls make a turn, go up!
Definition of Kasar: a group of earthen buildings surrounded by walls, ksar is a type of traditional pre-Saharan habitat. He belonged to only one family in power in the region. Unlike the kasbah, which belonged to several families that did not hold power.
Ait Benhaddou was selected by UNESCO in 1987 to become a World Heritage Site and currently benefits from funding for a renovation: architecture, support wall, water supply, electricity, etc. all without disfiguring the landscape (everything happens in the basement).
There is a breathtaking view of the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou: 5 minutes before arriving on the site, a small abandoned house with a mound of earth. Ideal for the panoramic photo.
In reality, this monument is not a Kasbah, but a Ksar. A Ksar refers to a fortified village formed by the reunion of a Kasbah and several dwellings. Housing houses, attics, a stable, and a well, the Ksar is a little bigger than a Kasbah, and its wall encompasses the whole.
Located 30 km north of Ouarzazate, the Ksar Ait Benhaddou is therefore called, most of the time, the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou. Along with the Taourirt Kasbah, Aït Benhaddou’s Kasbah has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Partially restored, this fortress marks the spirit with its great beauty. The site is also very famous and often serves as scenery for the cinema. Films like Lawrence of Arabia and Un thé au Sahara were shot here.
The play of light and perspective offered by the Kasbah has fascinated generations of filmmakers. Arriving on the scene, one can only be struck by the splendor of this fortress that spreads out on a hill overlooking the region. A real museum city. Stop below and continue on foot. Change of scenery guaranteed!
there are several films that have been shot in this ksar, including:
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – The Man Who Wanted to Be King (1975) – Jesus of Nazareth (televised) (1977) – Bandits, bandits (1981) – The Nile Diamond (1985) – Killing is not playing (1987) – The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) – A tea in the Sahara (1990) – Kundun (1997) – The Mummy (1999) – Gladiator (2000) – Alexandre (2004).
Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is located not far from Marrakech, it’s the Hollywood of Morocco, The town originated as a military post during the French occupation (1932–56). it is situated in an arid region that extends from the crests of the High Atlas southward to the borders of the Sahara.
Ouarzazate was the passed point of many African traders who were coming from the south to the north of Morocco.
Ouarzazate Located in the Great Atlas mountain range, the town was originally reduced to a small Amazigh village hanging at a mountain height of 1105 meters. The village of Taurirt, which is the origin of the Ouarzazate geographically, is attested to by its well-known memory, which to date still attracts many visitors due to its beauty and authenticity. In the center of the city and through its streets around Kasbah, the visit to Ouarzazate will have the opportunity to enjoy a great stroll (for traditional craft shops, a number of cooperatives, and museums). But exploring the destination of the rosettes is first done outside its walls. Since the past few years, the city has established itself as an important commercial center in this region, being the meeting point of the Valley of Dades with the Valley of Draa on the one hand, and the junction of roads leading to Marrakech and Agadir on the other.
The city also has many qualifications, such as inscriptions reminiscent of its origins, which return to the origins and shape of the city in other times, which has earned it a global reputation and made many directors and artists choose its forms and the perfect decorations it provides to film historical films. The city’s film studios are proud of the region, where visitors share the joy of getting to know this Hollywood saga by visiting it all year round.
Ouarzazate Atlas Studio
Photographic Studios
